My new Acer Aspire One
So I bit the bullet the other day at Staples and went and bought myself an Acer Aspire One. After having to go to another Staples that had them in stock, I had my very own.
At first glance, some things I really like about it:
- Lightweight: It's only 2 pounds or so, and it's much lighter than my previous Toshiba.
- Bright Screen: The LCD is tons brighter compared to my other LCDs, and is very sharp. It's just too shiny, I could probably use it instead of a mirror while it's off ;)
The one thing I really dislike about it is it's OS, Linpus. It's very limiting, but it runs with XFCE as the Window Manager, so it's not all bad. It just could be alot better, imo. It's good for people who just want to use their computers, not USE them.
The Intel Atom processor, at 1.6GHz with dual-cores, is pretty nice and responsive. It lacks 64-bit support, however.
The real drawback of this model is the SSD (Solid State Drive). It's write speed is so awfully slow, it's almost painful.
Anyway, I ditched all that for Gentoo + KDE4. :D Wifi works, the SD Reader works, and the Webcam works. The SD Reader is quirky, and requires that the SD card is plugged in before the machine is booted. I'm working on stripping the scripts for the SD card from the recovery disk of the One.
tnkgrl mobile has completed a hard drive upgrade and a bluetooth and ram upgrade. It takes a little bit of work to complete them, since the machine is so small, and the ram socket is only accessible via removing the motherboard ("Wow, what a GREAT idea").
Email Problems
Incoming Email was delayed today from about 2pm until midnight by a problem with amavisd-new and spamassassin. The temporary fix has amavisd-new disabled, so please scan all attachments in your email for viruses!
I'll have everything fixed tomorrow.
Server Maintenance
The Xen host is undergoing some maintenance over the next few days. I'm busy moving the MySQL server to a Xen Guest, and then configuring affected applications to point to it instead.

vsnine.org network maintenance
today the network is undergoing maintenance. the dallas linode bespin has moved to toronto, and the linode account is in the process of moving to newark, nj. the route between linode/dallas and scratch telecom in toronto is crap, but the route between newark and toronto is much better, averaging ping times of 16ms.
email is back online, and once the linode in newark is online, it will recieve a new configuration. some ideas i've had are for an asterisk gateway, or shoutcast server.
i'm interested in finding some business, and i can offer several services, including email, web hosting, and even VPS hosting. contact me at support at vsnine dot org, if you're interested.
